common Misconceptions
1. Plants need "plant food" to eat and water to "drink".“Plant food” (fertilizer) provide additional minerals and nutrients for plants. Plants are autotrophs which means through photosynthesis, they can make their own food. Plants do not "eat" or "drink." Water is transported through the roots to perform functions within their cells.

how to overcome:
Growing Plants Lab –
In this investigation of various factors that affect the growth of a plant, students will design and conduct an experiment that will examine the effects of one variable on the growth rate of seedlings thus showing that fertilizers are not necessary for plant growth.
|
2. Plants obtain their energy directly from the sun.Energy from the sun allows the plant to carry out photosynthesis and produce sugars. Respiration breaks down these products and provides energy for the plant.
|
how to overcome:
Video/Animation - Photosynthesis - Show students a video demonstrating that how energy from the sun in used in photosynthesis in order for plants to make their own food that is used for energy.
|
3. Pesticides/Herbicides are harmful to animals and the environment. The amount of pesticides/herbicides that are used are very strictly regulated to minimal risk levels. The use of pesticides keeps costs of agriculture low and yields high.
