Hook: Case Study: Smallpox – The First Vaccine
Students work in groups of 3 to examine the “Case Study: Smallpox – The First Vaccine” and complete the related questions.

Activity:
1. Antiviral Drug Facts: Teacher-centered learning in which the instructor goes through a factsheet discussing the use of antivirals in treatment and prevention.

2. Future Vaccines?: Students read, individually or in pairs, section 2.10 “Future Vaccines” pg. 106-107 and answer the related questions to explore the administration of vaccines and their role on human health.

3. Making Vaccines: Students work in pairs to complete an interactive activity that allows students to see how vaccines are made and to create six vaccines in a virtual laboratory, using a different technique to produce each one.

Consolidation/Debrief: Exit Card
