lesson #1: digestive anatomy and function
• Hook: Picture puzzle (diagnostic)
- Students re-arrange a series of pictures in their proper order and hypothesize about the details on a worksheet. - Recommended for work in teams to promote dialogue and critical thinking. Teamwork will provide opportunities for leadership growth and valuable skills in listening to new ideas and insight.
*Please see bottom of page for 6 document uploads*:
1) Documents 1-5 are the series of pictures that are to be jumbled and re-ordered.
2) Document 6 is a worksheet template to measure their analysis and critical thinking skills.
• Action: Human model + Gizmo
- Human Model: Students interactively probe a model’s interior organs and hypothesize which organ matches to your given list. (Which organ do you think is ____?). Teacher provides correct matching following diagnostic assessment.
- See provided links for an example of an interactive human model:
- Gizmo: Students interactively complete gizmo worksheet that focuses on function of the large organs. Once the original research is complete, they can alternate the placement of organs and observe the results.
- See provided link for access to interactive resource to exploration of the digestion system. Resource includes 1) interactive resource, 2) student exploration sheet, 3) sheet answer key, 4) teacher guide and 5) vocabulary sheet:
- Peristalsis Lab: As a student volunteer goes into a headstand (provide a soft covering for the head) and with two students holding the legs, instruct the student to bite and swallow from an offered banana.
- See provided link for access to additional sources that provide instructions for this explorative lab:
• Debrief: Name that organ!
- Provided with either the name of the organ OR an organ’s function, what is the corresponding pair? Examples of this exercise include:
- Alternative: Mix and match – students are given two lists of the organs and their functions. Students have to ‘connect’ matching organs with their function. Examples of this exercise include:

- Provided with either the name of the organ OR an organ’s function, what is the corresponding pair? Examples of this exercise include:
- Organ: Stomach ..... Function: _____________________
- Organ: Mouth ......... Function: _____________________
- Alternative: Mix and match – students are given two lists of the organs and their functions. Students have to ‘connect’ matching organs with their function. Examples of this exercise include:
- Stomach ................... Food's first entrance into the body.
- Small intestine ....... Removes precious water from food waste.
- Mouth ....................... Mixes smaller food particles with digestive enzymes.
- Large intestine ....... Absorbs nutrients for cell metabolism.
