OK, NOW YOU'RE READY TO PLAY VIRUSBALL!
How to Play:
First you'll need:
- The viral capsids you made from Lesson One. Oh you didn't do lesson one? Shame on you! Go do it and come back! Or go get the activity template from here.
- Desks and chairs
- A large bucket for each goal
OK, NOW YOU'RE READY TO PLAY VIRUSBALL!
How to Play:
- Divide the class into two teams. Each team should split itself into two sub teams: Sequencers and Antivirals
- Members of each Antiviral sub team arrange themselves in a row in front of a line of desks acting as a net. Sequencers stand off to the side. The goal is placed several feet behind each row of Antivirals.
- Four viruses are put into play, two on each side. Antiviral teams try to throw the viruses into the opposing team's goal. Each virus scored earns the team a point. A scored virus remains in the goal. The field of play should look like this:
4. After all the viruses have been scored it is the Sequencers' turn. This is where it gets tricky. The Sequencers
must crack open and sequence a complementary strand of RNA or DNA from every virus their team has
scored. They have a minute to do so per virus. If they finish before their allotted time they receive one point
per virus. If they do not finish in the allotted time the other team receives one point per unsequenced or
incorrectly sequenced virus.
5. The game begins again, until supply of viral models is exhausted. Teacher may want to have Sequencers and
Antivirals switch roles each round.
The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
